Female Relatives Badge 1914-1918 : Mrs M J Pflaum
Female Relative's badge with a blue enamelled oval around the voided letters 'AIF'. The oval contains the words 'ISSUED BY DEPT OF DEFENCE TO WOMEN OF AUSTRALIA'. An enamelled scroll beneath this contains the words 'FOR DUTY DONE'. The badge is surmounted by a King's Crown. Stamped on the reverse is the serial number '123732' and the maker's details 'STOKE & SONS MELB STG SIL'. The bars are impressed with the numbers '120795' and '120796'.
Mary Jane Theel married Heinrich Adam Theodor Pflaum at Gumeracha, South Australia on 8 April 1878 and they had 14 children born from 1879 to 1904.
During the First World War Mrs Pflaum was issued a Female Relatives Badge with two bars by the Australian government, indicating that she had three sons serving in the AIF overseas: Raymond Hostein, Theodor Milton, and Elliott Frederick.
Raymond and Theodor were killed during the war. A fourth son, Leonard Haddon, enlisted in August 1918 but did not see service overseas.
