"Joe Tierney being/ lowered to his last/ resting place with/ full military/ Honors [sic] in/ Old Cairo/ Cemetry [sic]/ Cairo - Egypt March 1915". A life insurance clerk of Sydney NSW, Tierney enlisted on 4 November 1914, embarking from Sydney in December aboard HMAT Persic (A34) for Egypt. 611 Lance Corporal Michael Joseph Tierney 5th Australian Light Horse Regiment died of pneumonia at Heliopolis, Egypt 6 March 1915, aged 27 years.
