Lake Como, Switzerland. C. 1945-08. Resemblance between lakes and mountains around Lake Como in a radar photograph. At first glance, the impression could be formed that the dark portions on the radar "map" are all lakes, but if the radar beam is thought of as a searchlight interpretation becomes easier. It is obvious that with light, if a mountain face is illuminated the rear part is in shadow. This is almost exactly the state of affairs in this radar photograph, and a comparison with the map of the area quickly establishes which are lakes and which hill shadows.
