Essex, England. 1945-09-15. Group Captain Douglas Bader who led the Battle of Britain pilots in the Battle of Britain anniversary flight over London climbs unassisted into the cockpit of his Spitfire aircraft before take off from RAF Station North Weald airfield. He had had both legs amputated and wooden legs fitted as a result of war wounds.
