Photographs relating to Frances Winifred Middenway, Department of Aircraft Production
Description
Beaufort bomber aircraft.
Collection of photographs relating to Frances 'Fran' Winifred Middenway. Born in Bathurst, NSW, Middenway joined the Australian Women’s Flying Club (AWFC) in 1938. While many members of the AWFC went on to join the Women’s Air Training Corps, another civilian organisation, or the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force (formed in 1942), Middenway joined the Department of Aircraft Production in late 1941, working at the NSW Area workshops at Chullora in Sydney. The Chullora complex produced large body sections for Beaufort and Bristol bombers, but the aircraft were assembled elsewhere in Sydney.
