Description

Private Ralph Silvester Scobie DCM as a private 54th Infantry Battalion AIF France 1917-1918, interviewed by Bryan Butler. Born Maitland NSW in 1900, third generation Australian; enlisted 4 September 1917; returned to Australia 22 December 1918. Transported to Europe via Panama Canal and West Indies. Awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for leading a machine gun section against German field gun in the approaches to Flamicourt, during the 5th Division's attack on Peronne. Wounded shortly after, many of his compatriots killed, evacuated to England and returned to Australia.
