Group portrait of unidentified Prisoners of War (POW) actors, in Arabian costume, on stage in a production of “Chu Chin Chow” at the Freiburg POW camp, Germany. “Chu Chin Chow” is a musical comedy written, produced and directed by Oscar Asche, with music by Frederic Norton, based (with minor embellishments) on the story of “Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves” and was the inspiration for this performance. The original piece premiered at His Majesty's Theatre in London on 3 August 1916 and ran for five years. For further images of this POW production see images P03236.269 and P03236.270. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London.
