Collection relating to the Second World War service of Doctor Ernest P. Hodgkin, 1942-1945

Papers of Doctor Ernest P. Hodgkin who was a member of the Colonial Medical Service employed by the British Institute for Medical Research in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, until he was interned in Changi Gaol as a civilian after the fall of Singapore. The papers include his handwritten diary (71 pages) written in the form of a letter to his wife and a typescript transcript (66 pages) of the same diary entitled 'Changi Diary: A civilian internee's account of imprisonment in Singapore February 1942 to August 1945'. The diary records details of the siege of Singapore, illnesses and the camp hospital, food rations and trading with the locals, the arrival of mail and Red Cross comforts, the importance of work in his daily routine, entertainment including plays and recitals, and activities associated with the end of the War. The collection also includes typescript and handwritten poetry written by Dr Hodgkin and others from the period and a sketch by him of a prisoner of war (POW).
