Collection relating to the Vietnam War service of 256868 Lieutenant Frederick Gibson Harvison, 8th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, Royal Australian Infantry Corps, Vietnam, 1969 - 1970.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Contains 11 letters [with associated envelopes] and one leaflet relating to Lieutenant Harvison’s service in Vietnam, dated 1969 to 1970.

The letters are written by Lieutenant Harvison to 276640 Captain Terence John Smith and his wife Robyn Smith, and are dated from December 1969 to September 1970. In the letters he writes to inform the Smiths of his movements, accommodation, health, upcoming recreational leave, future plans upon his return home and updates on his wife Barbara Leonie Harvison (née Jones). He also discusses the battalion’s injuries, close calls and casualties, airstrikes, uncovering of booby traps and mines, encounters with the Viet Cong, ambush operations and daily exercises. These letters also contain various associated illustrations drawn by Lieutenant Harvison, and one excerpt from an official record, titled ‘Contacts and Incidents’, c1970.

The Chiêu H¿i leaflet relates to the encouragement of the Viet Cong to defect from war. Attached to this leaflet is a possible translation written by Lieutenant Harvison.
