Description

Muthanna, Iraq. 1992-07. The hydrolysis plant inspected by the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) at the mustard incinerator site. This part of the plant was used for the production of nerve agent. During the Gulf War 1991 the facility was attacked by Coalition Air Forces but the weapon used against this site failed to detonate. After the war the site was re-engineered to destroy bulk nerve agent by by hydrolysing it with caustic soda. UNSCOM, operating under a UN mandate, was destroying everything related to chemical and conventional warfare.
