Wallet 1 of 1 - Log book relating to the Second World War service of Petty Officer Laurence David Edgar, 1941
Collection relating to the Second World War service of 20262 Petty Officer Laurence David Edgar, HMS Kanimbla, Royal Australian Navy, Iran, 1941.
Wallet 1 of 1 consists of one log book of Petty Officer Edgar and various crewmembers of HMS Kanimbla, containing entries dated between 26 August and 17 October 1941. This log book is written in a log book of the German freighter, Hohenfels, which was captured by the crew of HMS Kanimbla in the port of Bandar Shapur, Iran, on 24 August 1941. In this log book, the crewmembers of HMS Kanimbla, including Petty Officer Edgar, record the details of the salvage work done in Bandar Shapur after the successful surprise attack. It gives a comprehensive account of the raising of the Hohenfels after it was scuttled by the Germans, including details such as ship boardings, the movements of divers, water levels, the amounts of equipment salvaged, water pumping, and ship cleaning and repair. The log book also includes several entries by the German crew of the Hohenfels, written between 1938 and 1939. This log book was kept by Petty Officer Edgar after the Second World War.
