Description

Brighton, England. c.1944. Portrait of Squadron Leader Col Walker DSO RAAF, of No. 461 (Sunderland) Squadron, relaxing reading a book. Walker received a Companion of Distinguished Service Order (DSO) when he captained a Sunderland of No. 461 Squadron on 2 June 1943 when it was attacked by eight Junkers 88s of the German Air Force. Despite heavy attack in which the aircraft was badly damaged and the starboard galley gunner mortally wounded, Walker flew the crippled Sunderland back to Cornwall.(Original print housed in the AWM Archive Store).
