Young, Ian Alexander (Major, b.1960)
Collection relating to the Operation Solace service of 17462 Captain (later Major) Ian Alexander Young, Headquarters Australian Forces Somalia, Mogadishu, 1993.
Wallet 1 of 1 - Consists of typed and printed diary entries made by Young during his deployment to Somalia as Staff Officer Grade 3 (Operations) on Headquarters Australian Forces Somalia in Mogadishu. The collection contains detailed and almost daily entries from 8 January to 22 May 1993. Young writes of the farewell from Australia and his journey to Somalia via Diego Garcia, Mogadishu airport swarming with military aircraft, living conditions, shooting incidents and unauthorised discharges, and building up defences around the headquarters compound. He also details his routine and duties, accompanying patrols in Baidoa, humanitarian relief escorts, weapons confiscations, recreational activities such as football and running, observing Australia Day, Somali attitudes, food and United States rations, thefts, the courts-martial of two Australians from the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment for desertion, his return to Australia, and the medal presentation parade in Townsville.
