Description

Rectangular painted tin tea caddy. On the front is a picture of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, with a gold background and floral design above. Underneath their image is the text 'THEIR IMPERIAL MAJESTIES KING EDWARD VII & QUEEN ALEXANDRA WHEN PRINCE & PRINCESS OF WALES GRACIOUSLY ACCEPTED CASKETS OF TERRABONA TEA & COFFEE AT THE Olympia Exhibition February 8th 1894'. On either side of the caddy is an image of a Boer soldier shaking hands with 'John Bull'. Behind them is a circle with a map of South Africa. Above the map is an angel holding a palm frond with the words 'TERRABONA TEA / Peace forever'. On the reverse of the caddy a female figure with long hair, in classical dress is being served a cup of tea by a cupid. In the background is the waning moon. The figures leans on another circle with the map of South Africa. The caddy's lid is attached by a hinge at the back of the caddy. On the top of the lid is a picture of three butterflies with the text 'Even Butterflies prefer TERRABONA tea'. On each side of the lid is the name 'TERRABONA'.

History / Summary

Commemorative tin from Terrabona Tea Company celebrating the end of the Second South African (Boer) War. King Edward VII came to the throne during the war, upon the death of his mother Queen Victoria on 22 January 1901. The war ended on 31 May 1902
