Description
Spelter (zinc) bust of Major General Baden-Powell, treated to look like bronze. On the base of the bust is cast 'Maj. Gen BADEN-POWELL' in relief.
History / Summary
Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell was born on 22 February 1857. He served in the British Army from 1876 until 1910 in India and Africa. In 1899, during the Second South African War, he successfully led the defence of the city of Mafeking during the 217 day seige. He became a national hero and after the war established the Boy Scout movement. The Girl Guide movement was subsequently established by his sister, Agnes Baden-Powell. Baden Powell died on 8 January 1941.
