Description

The site of one of the The Buddhas of Bamiyan (or Bamyan), two 6th-century monumental statues carved into the side of a cliff in the Bamyan Valley, 130 kilometres northwest of Kabul. On orders from Taliban founder Mullah Omar, the statues were destroyed in March 2001, after the Taliban government declared that they were idols. The scaffolding may relate to a rehabilitation program undertaken by the German branch of International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in 2013.
