Women look across the Bamyan Valley, 130 kilometres northwest of Kabul. In the valley can be seen what remains of the Buddhas of Bamiyan (or Bamyan), two 6th-century monumental statues carved into the cliff-side. On orders from Taliban founder Mullah Omar, the statues were destroyed in March 2001, after the Taliban government declared that they were idols
