Description
The burnt out remains of a B-17 Flying Fortress, one of the six large aircraft, which included two Flying Fortresses and a B-24 Liberator, destroyed on the ground in the Japanese air-raid on the town on 3 March 1942. Most of these aircraft had just arrived from the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) carrying refugees who were still aboard them. 88 people were killed in the raid, including women and children, and probably as many again wounded. Fourteen flying boats in the harbour were also destroyed.
The two B17s destroyed on the ground were B17E 41-2449, and B-17E 41-2454.
