Collection relating to the service of 3875 Private William Charles Matthews
Description
Studio portrait of 2739B Private (Pte) Harold William George Thomas John "Will" Shea, 17th Battalion. A printer of Yass, New South Wales, Pte Shea enlisted in Goulburn on 10 May 1916. Pte Shea joined the 17th Battalion in France and was wounded in action on 15 April 1917. He died of his wounds the next day, on 16 April 1917. He was 21 years old. Pte Shea's portrait is signed on the lower right, "Yours sincerely, Will." His sister, Irene, inscribed the reverse with the following: "Dear Miss Mathews. My brother asked me to send you this photo. I could not send it before as I have been in Sydney. Yours sincerely, Irene Shea."
