Description

Studio portrait of 2nd Air Mechanic John Stone William Lord, Australian Flying Corps (AFC). A mechanical engineer of Sydney, New South Wales, Lord enlisted at Roseberry Park on 22 August 1914. He served with the 5th Australian Army Service Corps at Gallipoli before he was transferred to the 1st Light Horse Regiment in early 1916. In October 1916, he posted to the 68th Squadron, Australian Flying Corps (AFC) and was rated as a 2nd Air Mechanic. 2nd Air Mechanic Lord was attached to the 29th Training Squadron on 27 August 1917 for instruction. Upon graduation as pilot on 10 March 1918, he was appointed 2nd Lieutenant. 2nd Lieutenant Lord was killed on operations on 12 May 1918, as a result of a flying accident. He was 29 years old. His portrait is inscribed in the bottom right, "Yours sincerely, Jack Lord 12/11/16 A.F.C"
