Woven Sudanese pouch : Private J S Cole, New South Wales Sudan Contingent
Description
Small oblong bag made from woven cotton with a design of bands of small white and brown squares. The bag is woven with a continuous warp and a wrap around weft so that the only seam is at the corner where it is joined.
History / Summary
Brought back from the Sudan as a souvenir by 154 Private James Scott Cole, who served with C Company of the New South Wales Infantry contingent to the Sudan. He later used the bag to hold his discharge papers. Cole was born at Harden, NSW, and was a 21 year old bricklayer when he enlisted for service in the Sudan. He had previous service in the 1st Regiment of the NSW Volunteer Infantry, based in Goulburn.
