Huckins, John Edward (Gunner)
Description
Manuscript by Huckins, a Gunner in 22 Battery, 9th Coast Regiment of the Royal Artillery. Describes service in Singapore at the time of war in Europe, the fall of Singapore, Changi, and Burma-Thailand Railway. Concisely describes conditions, treatment by Japanese and Koreans, death, work, return to Singapore, transport to Japan first aboard Kachidoki Maru which was attacked and sunk during the journey, then aboard the rescuing Japanese frigate. Mentions conditions at Sakata, return to England via Canada. Huckins later migrated to Australia.
