Description

Australian Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Palk, Chief of Military Public Information, UNTAC (United Nations Transitional Authority Cambodia) walks along the runway away from the Russian built MI-17 helicopter, in United Nations (UN) livery, which lies damaged on the tarmac following its crash. The nose and rotor blades are smashed and the left side of the helicopter badly damaged after the tail rotor failed to function properly. The helicopter was carrying three UNTAC officials as well as a contingent of international media representatives, all of whom suffered injuries in the crash. The UNTAC officers were on their way to a meeting with other senior UNTAC officials. Following this accident UNTAC grounded its five remaining MI-17 helicopters pending an investigation.
