Siem Reap, Cambodia. 1993-03-20. Luggage is collected from the tarmac after the crashing of the UNTAC (United Nations Transitional Authority Cambodia) Russian built MI-17 helicopter, which injured all twenty three people aboard. The damaged helicopter in the background lies on its belly on the runway with damaged rotor blades, a smashed nose and side, showing the force of its impact. The helicopter was carrying on board three UNTAC (United Nations Transitional Authority Cambodia) officials, one being the Australian Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Palk, Chief of Military Public Information, as well as a contingent of international media representatives. The UNTAC officers were on their way to a meeting with other senior UNTAC officials. Following this accident UNTAC grounded its five remaining MI-17 helicopters pending an investigation.
