Siem Reap, Cambodia. 1993-03-20. An UNTAC (United Nations Transitional Authority Cambodia) ...
Siem Reap, Cambodia. 1993-03-20. An UNTAC (United Nations Transitional Authority Cambodia) Russian built MI-17 helicopter is loaded by cranes onto a trailer following its crash on the runway, in which all twenty three people aboard were injured. The damaged rotor blades, and crushed nose and side, show the force of impact. The helicopter was carrying three UNTAC (United Nations Transitional Authority Cambodia) officials, one being the Australian Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Palk, Chief of Military Public Information, as well as a contingent of international media representatives. The UNTAC officers were on their way to a meeting with other senior UNTAC officials. Following this accident UNTAC grounded its five remaining MI-17 helicopters pending an investigation.
