Description

c.1886. Studio portrait of 105 Private John Thornton who served in B Company or D Company of the New South Wales contingent to Sudan, the first armed force raised by a British colony and despatched overseas. The bugle horn badges, such as that on Thornton's hat, were widely worn by New South Wales regiments before the adoption of the 'badge of the Colony' insignia.
