Description

Laverton, Vic. 1944-11-14. Avro Lancaster bomber aircraft 'G for George' on the airfield at RAAF Station Laverton. This aircraft (original serial no. W4783) was allotted to No. 460 Squadron RAAF based at RAF Station Binbrook, Yorkshire, UK, given the code letter 'G' and so was named 'G for George'. During the height of the bomber offensive in 1943-1944, 'George' as flown on ninety operational missions over Germany and occupied Europe before being withdrawn from operational duty on 1944-04-21. After a major overhaul, 'George' was flown to Australia, arriving on 1944-11-08. The aircraft was placed on the RAAF register, given the serial no. A66-2 to replace its RAF serial no., and became the main attraction during the Third Victory Loan tour during which it visited numerous locations in the eastern states of Australia. (The aircraft 'G for George' is now in the AWM collection).
