Description
Salamaua, New Guinea. 1941-12. A crowd of people stand outside the airport hangar as women and children are evacuated from Salamaua, following the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbour. The women and children were flown to Australia in the Bulol Gold Dredging Ltd's tri-motor Junkers 31 aircraft VH-UOV, which Guinea Airways flew and maintained, by arrangement with Bulol Gold. The final evacuation of the remaining inhabitants of Salamaua took place on 24 January 1942. An indigenous (native) New Guinea man stands in the foreground. (Donor B. Rowe)
