Description

Hiro, Honshu, Japan, c. 1948-05. Magazines and pamphlets are neatly stacked on a table (right) and the bookshelves are well stocked with books in the library of the military camp at Hiro where the 67th Infantry Battalion, part of the Australian component of BCOF, is located. A sign attached to the side of a bookcase (left) reads: 'L50 Literary and Cartoon Competition conducted by A.A.E.S. Bulletin. Prize will be awarded to the value of L5, L3 and L2 (BAFSV) in each of the following categories: 1 Article - Approx. 800 words. 2 Short Story - Approx. 900 words. 3 Poem - Approx. 30 to 40 lines of verse. 4 Descriptive letter Home - Approx. 600 words. 5 Cartoon. Open to all A.M.F. and R.A.A.F. Personnel in B.C.O.F. See Conditions set out in A.E.S. Bulletin now on issue or get in touch with your nearest Education Centre.' The letters 'A.A.E.S.' stand for the Australian Army Education Service. Another sign at right points into the Reading Room in which part of a piano is visible, while over the doorway (right) a framed portrait of King George VI hangs against a background formed by an Australian flag.
