Description

Haramura, Honshu, Japan, 1949. NCOs from the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), serving with BCOF, undertake a training course at Haramura, the battalion's main field training centre. The soldiers are working on maps as they sit or stand around a table in the sun. The man standing behind the table is Warrant Officer 1 H. ('Jack') Harwood, while the man sitting at extreme right is 2/1142 Warrant Officer W.A.M. ('Dusty') Ryan. At rear is one of the barracks buildings in which the Australian soldiers were housed. 3RAR was formerly the 67th Infantry Battalion. WO Harwood served with the British Army in WW1 including Gallipoli, the Western Front and the Army of Occupation (Germany), and with the 2nd AIF in WW2. (Donor I. Robertson)
