Description

Australian Medical Support Force nursing officer, Captain Annette Owttrim (usually stationed at 1 Field Hospital Ingleburn, NSW) sits with local Rwandan mother Kurusumu Mukanyarwaya who is holding her ten week old baby, Gihart. Captain Owttrim is holding some of the baby products donated by Australian firms for critically ill and injured mothers in Rwanda. These products include baby washcloths, baby oil, formula and bibs. About ten cubic metres of the products were donated to the Australian Medical Support Force. Kurusmu survived a shrapnel wound from a bomb blast at the Kigali markets when she was seven months pregnant and was brought to the Kigali Central Hospital for treatment at the Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) wing. She gave birth to Girhart and was transferred to the intensive care unit at the Australian wing for specialist treatment when she experienced complications from surgery to her wound.
