Description

Officer commanding the infantry protection element for the Australian Medical Support Force, Major Michael Day, checks security at the guard box controlling entry into the barracks housing the headquarters and accommodation area of the medical force. The men are carrying Steyr F88 service rifles. Major Day is leaving the mission early to take up an appointment at Command and Staff College at Queenscliffe, Victoria. The Australian Medical Support Force was part of UNAMIR (United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda), a peacekeeping mission to the war-torn central African nation. The medical support force provided medical treatment to the UN troops and humanitarian help to the local people where possible.
