UNAMIR (United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda) Force Health Officer, Captain Matt Waixel, inspects health standards in the kitchen area of a local restaurant. Captain Waixel inspects restaurants used by the NGO (Non Government Organisation) staff, United Nations (UN) troops, and locals for health standards in the preparation of food. He then details whether it is safe to eat there. Captain Waixel is responsible for co-ordinating health programs, measures and standards ranging from disease identification and eradication to provision of sanitary corridors at displaced persons camps. The environmental health section is part of the Australian Medical Support Force in Rwanda who are part of UNAMIR (United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda), a peacekeeping mission to the war-torn central African nation. The environmental health section is responsible for instigating preventative measures to ensure the health of Australian and UN troops serving in Rwanda and to assist the local people with programmes to improve health conditions.
