Collection relating to the service of NX34734 Reginald William James Newton
An informal group portrait of members of Headquarters Company, 2/19th Battalion, standing in front of a car prior to their embarkation for Malaya. The Battalion was captured by the Japanese in the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942 and most of the men were killed in action (KIA) or held as prisoners of war (POW). Identified from left to right, back row: NX70592 Lieutenant John Brindley, 5 Platoon (POW); NX34869 Captain Charlton Fallaw, 3 Platoon (KIA in Malaya on 22 January 1942); NX34734 Capt Reginald William James Newton, Company Commander (POW); NX26768 Lieutenant James Alexander ‘Jim’ Howard, 2 Platoon (later Major); NX34935 Lt George Alexander Gill, 1 Platoon (KIA in Malaya on 22 January 1942).
