Description
Korea, c. 1950-10. A field kitchen set up in the open at a campsite occupied by the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), in the Korean countryside. The twin flues of a field oven stick up into the air (centre), while scattered around are ration boxes, dixies, tins, 44-gallon drums, a bucket, a jerry can and (left) a large washing-up basin sitting on a wooden crate. At right, a cook holding a bucket bends over a 44-gallon drum which has been cut in half lengthways to form a makeshift sink. Several tents or hoochies are set up, with soldiers sitting on boxes among them. Clothes lines rigged up here and there have towels, puttees and articles of clothing hanging on them. (Donor I. Robertson)
