Collection relating to the service of NX34734 Reginald William James Newton
An informal group portrait of members of 17 Platoon, 2/19th Battalion at Endau Johore, Malaya. The Battalion was later captured by the Japanese in the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942 and most of the men were killed in action (KIA) or held as prisoners of war (POW). Identified, from left to right, standing in the back row: NX35671 Private (Pte) Frederick James Wilson (POW); NX35547 Pte Robert Graham (POW); NX52481 Corporal (Cpl) Verdon Graham ‘Bricky’ Winbank (POW); NX35764 Pte James Patrick Gorham (POW); Roy Mulholland; Pte G M ‘Glen’ Scriven, probably NX29830 Pte Glanville Walter Scriven (discharged 6 February 1943) (Transport); NX60090 Lieutenant John Ashton Varley, MC (POW); NX35864 Pte John David Fuks (escaped from Singapore and made it back to Australia).
