Lord Kitchener is presented to returned soldiers, veterans of the Boer War, by Colonel James Rowell. Colonel Rowell, the father of Lieutenant General Sir Sydney Rowell, was one of the early volunteer soldiers in South Australia, being commissioned in 1877. He had commanded the South Australian contingent to Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and later the 4th Imperial Bushmen's Corps in South Africa. In 1910 he was the commander of the South Australian Brigade and a consultative member of the Australian Military Board.
