Brunswick Rifle Bayonet 1st Pattern: New South Wales Volunteer Rifle Corps
Description
Brunswick Rifle bayonet. It has a ribbed brass hilt with a crossbar that has down turned ends. A locking button protrudes from the centre of the grip connecting to a spring latch. The pommel is marked 'A/24' to match the rifle (REL23810.001) and has a T section slot at the end. The double edged blade swells to a spear point with central fuller to half of the length from the hilt. The blade is marked crown over 'VR/ Enfield 1848' on the ricasso.
History / Summary
This bayonet accompanies a rifle from the collection of Walter Lindsay Venables Vernon of Sydney, NSW, who obtained them in the 1880s. Walter Vernon served in the Boer War and became colonel of the NSW Lancers.
