Sime, Durward MBE MC (Major b.1911 - d.1994)
Recollections of Major Sime. Describes evacuation of plantation in South Jahore, Malaya, as Japanese invasion loomed. Mentions work as Intelligence Officer for AIF, joining Singapore Volunteer Corps, and escape from Malaya by boat via Rhio Archipelago and Sumatra to Fremantle. Detailed description of involement in Operation Carpenter, after joining Z Special Unit, Services Reconnaisance Department. Details the clandestine operation, in which a party of men made their way to South Jahore in HM Submarine Telemachus in September 1944, set up base for radio communications, and involved themselves in the operations of the Anti- Japanese Forces. Describes activities up until the surrender of Japanese, including dealing with Inter Services Liaison Department and Operation Mint, and mentions involvement of Force 136 and subequent `Carpenter' operations activated throughout period of war. Includes report by Captain Trevaldwyn MC, and extracts from publications describing action at Lae with 2/4 Australian Commando Company, Operation Mint, and SOE.
