Description
Rockhampton, QLD. c.1942. A group of Women's National Emergency Legion (WNEL) members stand in the cow bails while others sit in the hay learning the lessons of farm work from a farm hand who is standing next to a steer. Included in the group are Mrs Myra Kelly, Commandant of the Rockhampton WNEL 1942-1945 (fifth from left), her daughter Ruth Kelly (later Ross) (third from left), Mrs Laurence (second from left) and Mrs Scheider, a Corporal (seated on ground, far right). WNEL was a voluntary organisation whose members helped out on farms, in hospitals, as airspotters and in other areas of need within the community. As well as undertaking this volunteer war work, most WNEL members had day time jobs.
