Mansfield, Percy David (Lance Corporal, b.1895 - d.1916)
Description
Transcript of several pages from diary and letters to family. Describes journey on troopship, stop over at Colombo in Ceylon, natives, arrival and sightseeing in Egypt, Cairo piquet, sweetheart back home, and carving names into the top of a pyramid. Frequently mentions good health, enthusiasm for being a soldier and impatience to go to the front. Also mentions getting the mumps, the French countryside, and joining the 7th Battalion (Mansfield was killed at Pozieres about a month later) after training with 13th Reinforcements. See also PR00597 for letters and diaries of his friend Sergeant William Edward Peach.
