Description

Sparks fly from a lathe used by a bare-chested Japanese prisoner held at the RAN War Criminal Compound at an RAN shore base, as he prepares tools in the machine shop at the compound. Work on this RAN base commenced in August 1948. It was commissioned as HMAS Seeadler on 1 January 1950 and recommissioned as HMAS Tarangau on 1 April 1950. The name was transferred from the decommissioned RAN Base at Dreger Harbour, New Guinea. (Navy Historical Collection)
