Description
The interior of the tent of 52680 Major Owen Maxwell (Max) Carroll, 5th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (5RAR), showing his personal kit and on the floor his basic equipment packed ready for a jungle patrol. The pack and webbing are British 1944 pattern issue and the equipment is from the United States. Note the red identification band around the hat. This was used by 5RAR to distinguish Australian servicemen from the Viet Cong. In the foreground is a 5.56 mm M16A1 automatic rifle mounted on a spring loaded bipod. The bipod was used to keep the weapon off the ground. On the webbing can be seen a machete, bayonet and four water bottles instead of the standard issue of two.
