Rabaul, New Britain. 1941-06. Aerial photograph of smoke billowing from the active Matupi volcano following its eruption. Matupi erupted in 1937 causing a loss of 600 lives and the eruption in 1941 resulted in a loss of two lives. During the Japanese occupation of Rabaul this volcano and other volcanoes surrounding Rabaul were bombed by allied air forces to induce them to erupt. (Donor J. Smith)
