Description
Nadzab, New Guinea. 1943-09-05. Smoke billows from behind low flying United States A20 (Boston) aircraft which are providing a smoke screen for a parachute landing of the American 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment and a detachment of the 2/4th Australian Field Regiment in the Markham Valley. In the background are several Lockheed Lightning aircraft which are providing protection from above. The surrounding mountainous terrain provides a dramatic backdrop to the airborne assault.
