Probably Townsville, Qld. c.1943-06. Group portrait of an all South Australian crew from No. 7 (General Reconnaissance Bomber) Beaufort Squadron RAAF standing in front of a Beaufort aircraft after they had shot down the Japanese floatplane "Jake" on 26 June 1943 while patrolling over the Torres Strait. Left to right: Flying Officer Basil Waters, 416024 Flying Officer Peter Phillip Adrian Hopton, captain, Flying Officer Burk Salter and Ron Stoner. Hopton was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for his courageous flying duties in the South West Pacific. Hopton was responsible for shooting down the first enemy aircraft credited to his Squadron. (Donor P. Hopton)
