Sticpewich, William Hector MBE (Major b.1908 - d.1977)
Papers regarding Sticpewich's experiences as a prisoner of war (POW) in North Borneo and post-war duties with 1 Australian Search Party, 31 Australian War Graves Unit. Includes detailed statement describing treatment of POWs at Sandakan, destruction of camp, forced march to Ranau, and escape, describes atrocities of Japanese guards. Includes excerpts from War Crimes trials of Sandakan and Ambon, statements made by Japanese/Formosan ex-guards regarding the killing of prisoners, translated statements by natives, sketch of `Experiment Farm' Camp at Sandakan, documents related to graves at Kuching and Labuan War Cemetery, various nominal rolls, booklet `A tragedy of Borneo 1941-45' proposing a national park as a memorial, medical report by E. Dunlop describing post-war health of Sticpewich. Also includes 1946-47 diaries, describing the search (by foot) for graves and remains in North/ Central Borneo, describing organisation of labour (including payment, rations, health), recovery of remains and artifacts, and use of local informants. Includes letters and photographs from former Formosan guard returned to Taiwan, indicating post-war conditions in his country.
