Transcript of speech given by Captain Southey to the RUSI in Melbourne. Describes training with 161 Officer Cadet Training Unit at Sandhurst Royal Military College, and service in the Coldstream Guards including participation in Operation `Torch' and action in Tunisia (including battle for `Longstop Hill') and Italy. Mentions training for invasion of Japan when hearing of atomic bomb, comments on performance of the American Army and on the officers of the Foot Guards. Gives an indication of an Australian's experiences as an officer in the British Army.
