Description
Qld. 1944-09-21. A Martin PBM Mariner flying boat aircraft seen from another aircraft at 9000 feet while flying from Cairns to Port Moresby, New Guinea. The type, used as long-range patrol bombers by the United States Navy, are now flown and maintained by members of of No. 41 (Transport Sea) Squadron RAAF based at Cairns. When "double-header" or duplicated services are flown, pilots are sometimes able to work a bit of training in to relieve the tedium of long oversea flights. Ability to handle the big boats confidently and accurately in formation is desirable: they may need to do this when carrying out mass movements in operational areas and with fighter escort.
