New Guinea. 1944-09-22. Martin PBM Mariner flying boat aircraft, serial no. A70-5, of No. 41 (Transport Sea) Squadron RAAF based at Cairns, in flight between Hollandia and Madang. Captain's orders: 262327 Flight Lieutenant N. J. Lennon of Kensington, NSW, speaking into a hand-held microphone to his flight engineer. The captain wears split headphones, enabling him to listen to two channels simultaneously, or to have inter-comm on one ear and choice of big set or inter-squadron receiver on the other.
